In the interest of transparency and accountability, this year the Election Board will make public every time it finds a candidate has violated Election Rules and issues a sanction in response.
A complaint was reported to the Election Board that Michelle Seu and Lizz Chen had used SGA resources to promote their presidential campaign. Seu and Chen had posted their campaign platform through a myUMBC group owned by SGA's Department of Academic Affairs. The post in question has since been removed.
By a vote of 6-0 with 1 member absent, the Election Board decided that Seu's and Chen's use of an SGA myUMBC group to promote their campaign violated Election Rule #15 (the Election Rules can be found here), which prohibits candidates from using SGA resources or the resources of any UMBC office to campaign.
By a vote of 7-0, the Election Board determined that the proper sanction for the violation was an official warning to the Seu-Chen campaign.
In accordance with the SGA Constitution, "All decisions of the Elections Board are final and not subject to appeal."
Any student may file a complaint about potential violations of Election Rules by emailing the Election Board Chair, Evan Leiter-Mason, at leiter1@umbc.edu.
