As the first design course of UMBC Mechanical Engineering curriculum, ENME204 "Introduction to Design with CAD (Instructor: Dr. Soobum Lee)" introduces students to the overall engineering design procedure and teamwork with an opportunity to manufacture their own TOYs! 81 students from sophomore to senior were grouped into 18 teams. Each team actively used brainstorming sessions to figure out design requirements, used basic kinematics and CAD to design each part, and used 3D printing to manufacture their toy. The students learned the basic process of product development, as well as the importance of good communication for teamwork. Each toy was evaluated by design criteria which were also included in each team's QFD (quality function deployment) chart: safety, fun/easy to play with, aesthetic, and mechanism implementation. The toys are on display in the Mechanical Engineering Department office.
