Installers had to contend with continued heavy use of the RLC today, shooing students off the temporary seats at the booth tables (read as: politely asking students to move) so that the permanent benches could be positioned and anchored. Booths were fully re-occupied within five minutes of installation.
Each booth bench can sit up to three people, so the 12 benches provide seating for up to 36 people. The seats are vinyl and the backs are cloth.
Over the past few days, two large tables and a dozen more chairs have been scavenged from the rest of the Library to try to meet the demand in the RLC. Hopefully, these, in addition to the booth seating, will suffice until the remainder of the RLC furniture is chosen and ordered.
Part of the planning strategy for the RLC was that it would draw study groups to it, thereby making the Library's upper floors less densely populated and quieter for individual study. This is only partially working, since at peak times (mid-afternoons) the upper floors are still densely populated. Perhaps there is now less group study taking place on floors 5 & 6, which are the "absolute quiet" floors.
