The construction of the Retriever Learning Center began on Tuesday, May 31, 2011. The contractor has blocked off the construction zone with plastic sheeting and by locking the door to the 24/7 Lounge. That door is the contractor's entrance to the facility.
The first stage is demolition, which began with the removal of a section of glass wall between the 24/7 lounge and the East Wing of the Library's first floor. Debris from the demolition will be removed and construction materials will be brought in through the atrium.
Access to the Library lower level (for all government documents, and low use serials and reference books) is now from the 2nd floor only, by elevator or stairs in the center of the East Wing.
There are two vending machines installed in the Atrium for the Summer. The other vending machines are in storage until the completion of construction in late August. The supplies vending machine remains in the printing/photocopying room on the first floor until construction is completed, when it will be moved to the RLC along with the other vending machines.
Furniture which was in the construction zone is being relocated throughout the Library, with the exception of pieces which will be surplussed because they do not match the decor of the building. Some of the Jasper chairs from this area have been sent out for refurbishing and may be used at opening time in the RLC until the full complement of seating is purchased during the 2011-1012 academic year.
