Workshop Overview
The Learn to Code series will take you through all the steps to make your own site. You’ll learn skills that employers value such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Git. You’ll learn to use tools such as the command line, a text editor, and the web inspector to modify or build your own website. No previous coding knowledge is required, as this course will be perfect for beginners who want to get started in web development, designers who wish to code sites on their own, or marketers that want a little more control over their site.
Day 1: Intro to Web Concepts + Building a Site with HTML
Objective: To establish an understanding of basic web concepts, build a site using HTML, and deploy it live with Git and Github.
At the end of the workshop students will be able to:
- Explain the difference between front-end and back-end web development
- Navigate through the terminal
- Utilize a text editor
- Create a site using HTML
- Deploy their sites live using Github
Day 2: Foundations of CSS + Intro to JavaScript
Objective: To use CSS to apply styles to a webpage written in HTML and gain a fundamental understanding of the basics of JavaScript.
At the end of the workshop students will be able to:
- Style a page using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
- Utilize the web inspector to make changes to a page using HTML and CSS
- Incorporate JavaScript elements into a webpage
- Utilize variables, strings, and methods to improve the interactivity of their webpage
Prerequisites
- No previous programming knowledge is required
Class Materials
- Laptop with the capability to download a text editor
- Laptop Charger
- Pen + paper or other note-taking materials
