Anyone downloading and using the free Microsoft tools?

So I'm in the process of interviewing with a local contractor and they sent me a bunch of VB files to look at. I don't own VB Studio on my machine; so I went out to the MS site to see what I could find for free.
It appears the majority of Visual Studio is now mostly free. Disclaimer: I'm skimming the site and downloading the first tool that meets my needs and is free.
Do any of you use these free tools?
I will say this... be prepared for an ungodly long time to download and install these tools. At least this is my experience and I'm having to do it over Wi-Fi.
It also appears that there is a 30 day trial period; but getting a license is just the simple matter of registering on the site. Still no cost involved - up to this point at least.
I can see this coming in handy for some of these government contractors in the area that are forced to use a specific technology.
