RETRIEVERFLEET
Retrieverfleet is a free short-term bike sharing program for students, faculty and staff. Development of the Retrieverfleet program is due to continued concerns of rising fuel costs, traffic congestion, climate change, physical fitness, and greater accessibility to our surrounding community, and a more.
There are a number of reasons to take advantage of the Retrieverfleet program:
- Provides convenient transportation around campus and city of Catonsville & Arbutus without relying on a car or bus
- Riding a bike helps to lower your carbon footprint and decreases green house gas emissions
- Creates an excellent source of exercise
The fleet of 6 bikes consists of Diamondback hybrid bikes with frame sizes of 20, 17.5. Bikes come equipped with a water bottle holder and bike lock, as well as a helmet (for mandatory use).
Bike specifications can be found at: http://www.diamondback.com/bikes-pavement-performance-hybrid-insight-sti-8 and http://www.diamondback.com/bikes-pavement-womens-performance-hybrid-clarity-2
Bike sizing is not an exact science, but a general rule of thumb is as follows:
Your Height |
Your Inseam Length |
Bike Frame Size |
5’5" and smaller |
26” and smaller |
15 inch |
5’6” and taller |
27” and taller |
19 inch |
Remember that the bike seat is adjustable. Seat height should allow your knee to have a slight bend when extended. If your knee is fully extended, the seat should be lowered.
All UMBC students, faculty and staff are eligible to check out a bike by presenting and swiping their UMBC I.D. at the designated RAC checkout location.
The Retrieverfleet bike program works like checking out a basketball. All you need is your UMBC I.D. card. You will need to sign the checkout log/contract and staff will hand you the key to your bike lock. Helmets are available and required of this program. (Fact: A bicycle helmet reduces the risk of serious head injury by 85 percent. All bicycle riders are encouraged to wear helmets whenever they ride. Maryland law requires riders under the age of 16 years to wear approved helmets when riding)
Participants need to be 18 years of age or have parent/guardian signature, and be present with a current UMBC student, faculty, or staff member. The UMBC photo ID must be their own and displayed at the checkout location, before reading/signing the bike/helmet/lock agreement & contract.
The program is free of charge, unless damage is done to the bike due to negligence or vandalism.
All checkouts and returns must commence at the RAC location.
You can check out a bike for single day use. All bikes must be returned by 15 minutes prior to closing or late fees may apply.
Long term bike rentals are available at the RAC for extended usage. Prices are as follows per overnight rental:
Each additional day based on the bike model |
||
$17—15 inch bike frame $17—19 inch bike frame |
|
Your bike, lock, key and helmet are all due back to the checkout location 15 minutes prior to the RAC closing on the same day it was checked out. If the bike is not returned, your myumbc account will be charged $17 a day for each additional day. If the bike is lost, destroyed or not returned after 10 days, you will be charged the retail cost of the bike and accessories. If the bike is returned dirty and requires additional cleaning, a $10 cleaning fee will be charged to your myumbc account.
Always remember to LOCK your bike! Remember - don't leave your bike unattended, even for just a minute.
If your bike gets stolen, contact the UMBC Police Department immediately at 410-455-5555 to report a bike theft. Also, inform the RAC Manager on Duty that you have filed a police report.
To report a problem with the bike you have checked out, please return all the equipment to the RAC location, and notify the Manager on Duty of the problem. The RAC equipment desk has an air pump; please use the elevator to transport the bike down to the 1st floor location.
