Advance Registration for Fall 2013 (and Summer 2013) is due to begin on Monday, March 25th. That's the Monday immediately after Spring Break!
You will likely hear from your academic advisors in the next couple of weeks, but there are things that you can start doing now to get yourself ready for Registration...
- Make sure that you will be up-to-date on all of your bills and fees before Registration begins.*
- Make sure that there are no other holds on your UMBC account. Most advisors do not have access to this kind of detail in your records, so be sure to check your own "Alerts" in myUMBC.
- If you transferred in coursework from another school, or brought in AP/IB/CLEP scores, check your Transfer Credit Report to make sure that everything is there. If courses or scores are missing or incorrect, check in with Admissions (to see if your complete transcripts/score reports were received) or the Registrar's Office (for errors in processing), and follow up with updated copies, if needed.
- Look over your Degree Audit and identify the requirements (University, GEP, and Major) that you still need to fulfill.
- Think about your short- and long-term goals, your academic performance (good and poor), and your non-academic responsibilities. All of these things should play a part in your decision-making process during Registration!
- Make note of questions that you want to remember to ask your advisor.
- If you are planning to take summer courses elsewhere, familiarize yourself with the UMBC policies and paperwork before you meet with your advisor. There may be additional rules/restrictions based on your major or academic history.
FYI, registering for Summer Session at UMBC does not require advising clearance, and is not limited by your class standing. Everyone can begin registering for Summer 2013 on March 25th!
For items 4-6, the CNMS Advising staff has developed a worksheet to help students prepare for an advising appointment. You can find it in the Documents section of this myUMBC Group, or by following this link.
If you need some reminders about how to navigate SA to find your Transfer Credit Report, Degree Audit, and your Registration functions, you can find more information by following this link.
* Note: If being financially cleared before your registration date isn't possible, SEE YOUR ADVISOR ANYWAY! Your advising clearance is not connected to your financial eligibility, so they can still see you if you are trying to get your finances worked out. Faculty advisors often carve out a special period of time in their calendar for undergraduate advising. If you miss that window, it can delay your ability to register for classes once your bills taken care of. Get in to see them when their attention is focused on working with you!
