Maurice Berger's latest Race Stories column for the Lens Blog of the New York Times: On Matt Herron's photographs of the Freedom Summer in 1964. He was the founder and director of the Southern Documentary Project, a photo unit largely overlooked by historians. Berger calls the work "a revelation" - producing a cultural history of civil rights.
