Did you Know?
About the "Wear Purple" facebook page that got raided?
posted over 13 years ago
There were millions of people "attending" and there was about an entire new page worth of posts every 5-10 minutes at peak hours of posting.
Then the trolls came from /b/.
Some people fought back, in a variety of ways. Some created additional spin-off pages, reported pictures, campaigned to correct misinformation and make it clear that the trolls were...in a league of their own, let's say. And someone created a petition that was signed and I believe that eventually made headlines, and facebook administrators began monitoring posts more actively.
I tried to engage the person behind the troll profile known as "Tyler Clementi" in an email conversation. I'm thinking about posting the screenshots of that convo here. He ended the conversation abruptly but I'm pleasantly surprised he engaged me for so long, as I did not expect him to attempt to share his thoughts.
Did anyone else here hang around said facebook event? If you didn't, you probably might not know what I'm referring to, but if anyone did, I guarantee they'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
What were your impressions of the things that went on there? Did anyone remain longer than to click "attending," and what did you do? I'm curious to hear others' stories.
[the website link below is the first link I found in google while using the search terms "tyler clementi facebook troll event gay". There's no citations, I think, but it is one of the most comprehensive posts about the event that I've seen]
p.s. and again, the tags are not necessarily relevant, they're just to facilitate easier searching of posts I've made, mostly for my own convenience.
