Laptop to class
Writing notes or typng notes?

Is it recommended to bring your laptop to and from class? I figure I could type notes faster and have them to share if needed. Should we check with professors before doing so?

Hi Tara, for me using my laptop is very helpful, especially if there are impairments. But in general I find it helps a lot. You do need to check with the professor first and read the syllabus for their disclaimers on devices in class. Not all professors are receptive to using laptops in class. But there are generous and understanding professors who are receptive and ask that you take notes and stay focused on classwork and the lectures which is a very reasonable request.
If you need it for an accommodation due to a disability or learning tool, then make sure you are registered for Student Support Services in the Sherman Building (previously AC IV building) on the third floor and follow the appropriate protocol from there. I personally find SSS very helpful.
I do share my type written notes and find it also convenient when students send me class notes when I am ill or simply to mutually share to study for an exam. I also find a computer useful if there are various dittos and PDFs, and slides (Powerpoint) to read or view and highlight during class. It cuts down on paper, rifling through papers and I can adjust the type, and font for my comfort not to mention highlight with the computer.
Have a wonderful semester !
