What purpose does IQ serve?

I'm curious, what is the point of an "IQ" test?
To me, its the equivalent of saying "I have a X inch you-know-what". Basically, IQ tests serve the same function, to give people a reason to feel better about themselves on the high end, while making average people feel inadequate.
What purpose does it serve, beside stroking egos? An average brain would like to know.
