Now there are other articles about this topic than the one I posted in the link below. I believe some of you know about the massive decline in honeybee populations in the United States (also known as apis mellifera). I believe that we know the dangers that insecticides poses for honeybees - they are insects of course. However, it appears that a cocktail of pesticides (and not merely one pesticide) is hampering the honeybees' ability to fight off parasites. The article states that pollen contaminated with fungicides made a sample of bees less able to resist infections (say, from a parasite such as nosema ceranae). This issue is currently under investigation.
Honeybees are important to the agriculture business. And yet their numbers are falling - possibly due to decreased ability to fight infections such as those from nosema ceranae. What does the myUMBC community think about this issue?
