Military allowing women into combat roles

The military has announced that they will be allowing women to fulfill many combat roles previously closed off to them. Even Special Ops is said to be considering allowing women to join.

Is this a good decision, and long overdue? Or is this a mistake, that may effect fighting capability?
What say you UMBC'ers? I especially would like to hear from the veterans out there.
