End of UMBC Confessions - Administrative Tyranny?
End of free speech at UMBC?
posted over 11 years ago
Friends, administrators, students. This is not a call to arms, but rather, a wake up call. Recently, a twitter account called "UMBC Confessions" was officially taken down. This account was used as a way for students to express their thoughts, ideas and frustrations in an anonymous form. A lot of the tweets happened to be very sexually violent in nature and quite offensive. With natural student opposition to the content, I'm sure a lot of pressure was exerted onto administration to act and deal with these negative comments. I, myself believe that the tweets which singled out and attacked particular students at our school via this feed were especially horrifying. While all of these comments, attacks and negative statements are terrible, the right to free speech still exists. I am not advocating a pro-UMBC confessions stance, but rather an anti-elimination of the free speech which was clearly violated via the action that occurred with the elimination of this account.
