Defend Free Speech on Campus- Please Paw
posted almost 12 years ago
I am writing because I was distraught by the recent post that attempted to publicly humiliate Erik Walker.
First, I view this as an attempt to silence him--and free speech--on campus. I protest this.
Second, attempts at public humiliation are tantamount to bullying. We all know this is wrong in high school. We should certainly know by the time we reach college. It appears that he has been vandalized in the past, perhaps due to just this sort of incitement.
Third, it makes his opponents look ridiculous. We all know that in a debate, the one who stops making substantive arguments and instead begins screaming insults at his opponent, is the one who has lost the debate. (I don't necessarily protest this...)
In contrast, Erik Walker's arguments are often well-reasoned and backed up by sources. People may find him insulting, but in light of recent attacks against him, this is quite ironic. It indeed appears that the often obsessive hatred directed against him is due to his defense of a God-based morality of objective right and wrong, which some cannot tolerate. But that's just intolerance.
