How diverse are we really?
Do we take advantage of the diversity at UMBC?

So I'm in a journalism class and my final story of the year is focusing on the perception of diversity at UMBC. The numbers show that we're really diverse, but do we take advantage of it? The whole point of diversity is that we interact with people who are different from us on our own time, not in campus-sponsored ways.
I guess I also think about free-hour at the commons. Not to be awkward or anything, but I tend to notice that all the Asians hang out together, all the African-Americans hang out, and all the White people hang out. I hope that this isn't representative of how diversity works here. I want to think that people are involved in student organizations where there is lots of cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity.
What are people's experiences with diversity at UMBC? Has diversity had an effect on our education and our social interactions? What do people think?
