Twitter being used along with emails for class?

Last fall I had a calc professor that said he was thinking of putting up a twitter account for his class, that could be used along with email to help students. Never ended up happening, but with how often people are on twitter it seems, do you think this would add something? All of this could be posted on it:
+When grades were released
+Homework assignments
+Test dates
+Tips for homeworks/projects
I know that these things are on blackboard already, and usually emailed out too, but lets be honest: the less I have to use blackboard the happier I am. I would be TAing a course in the fall, I was just wondering if this idea seems like half a grain of anything.
Thanks for your input :)
