It seems that UMBC will no longer accept students with disability especially at the Social Work Department in the coming years . I am a Social Work student at UMBC and take class at the Shadygrove campus. The field coordinator at Shadygrove flip flaped over my resume pretending that there is an integrity issue. However, I went to the dean office with all document to prove that the integrity issue cannot be kept and trapped her on the issue pretending that I need her help to change my major to Sociology and took advantage to ask her the reason for flip flaping. I let her know that field coordinator is flip flapping over sending me to field and i don't trust her. She let me know that the department does not want to send me to field placement because they think that my disability will prevent me from performing very well. Therefore, she thinks that Sociology is the smart move for me. Are peole with disability no longer free to pick their profession or some other peope have to choose for them? I have received an injury in my left leg, which causes me to be permanently handicapped and work with a crutch. The Social Work Department at UMBC makes me fell that my handicap is a sin by not sending me to field because of that. I am interested in bringing the issue to ADA, MHEC, Congress, and other organizations that are fighting for the right of students and people with disability. Please, post your thoughts and give me your support to eliminate such discrimination at UMBC.
