Khalid ibn Al-Walid (Sword of Islam) during the Battle of Qadaisiyya back in 636 sent in a message to the Persian commander. However the message was actually from the first Muslim caliph, Caliph Abu Bakr...and his message wasn't quite what it has become.
The original text of the message was more like:
"You should convert to Islam, and then you will be safe, for if you don’t, you should know that I have come to you with an army of men that love death, as you love life."
The phrase has been used by Osama bin Laden, cropped up in the video from the Madrid subway bombing, Fathi Hamad from Hamas in Palestine, Adis Medunjanin in the car crash/police chase a couple years ago, and many others that I'm sure that I missed.
It's pretty much the Jihadist's mantra/battlecry.
