Trans-related Violence
Catholics to Transwomen: You should die not transition
posted almost 14 years ago
Hello. I've been seeing a lot of articles and pieces about trans-related violence recently, so I figured in an attempt to spread it around I'd post about each article and my comments on it. The reason I'm doing this is because people outside of the loop don't really seem to know the sorts of violence and bigotry we face.
For those concerned with etiquette, I will refer you to this excellent post on the escapist forums:

On to the actual articles. It'll be short for now, since I'm not adding old ones I've read before.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Transwoman assaulted at Kohls:

Here's the one that kicked things off:
I chose this one to start the topic off mainly because of the very typical police reaction to the crime, and the equally typical bystander reaction. It's very common in reports of trans-related violence for the police to be very professional, *until* they realize the person is trans, after which they stop taking the complaint seriously. The bystander reaction, complete indifference, is also very typical. It's actually quite benign, in comparison to other common responses such as laughter or actually joining in.

2. Black and Transgender(Speech)

Very similar to the previous case. I think this one is interesting mainly in the lengths perpetrator goes to in order to follow the victim so that they can harass them more, even after the beating. It also showcases more obvious trans related discrimination from the public and police, with both groups actively laughing at the victim.

3.Men with Gasmasks and Teargas attack Kiev TDOR Gathering:

This one is admittedly unusual, although supposedly not for the area(Kiev).
The worst of the crime was thankfully prevented, but the perpetrators got away and the police don't seem to be concerned. Apparently, according to the police, this was not a hate crime. Obviously, creating and executing a plan to break up a peaceful gathering for an LGBT event using tear gas could *never* be a hate crime.

4.Memphis police officer taped beating transgender suspect:

Here's one that's particularly bad. The officer in question is actually punished, thankfully, but I've put it up mostly to show what lengths you have to go through as a police officer to be punished to a specific degree. This changes with jurisdiction and department, of course, but I think the message still holds in a large enough number of cases to be applicable.

5.Catholic Exchange to Transwomen: "It is better do die than transition"

Not violence directly, but certainly a rather telling comment. I can't even figure out how to justify this one, especially since nothing in Catholic faith would even make transitioning a sin so long as you work out which sex of person you need to sleep with in order to not engage in homosexual sex.
