Why are gay people exempt from basic human decency?
The new racism.

I've been hearing a lot about the persecution and/or demonization of
gays and lesbians on the web. Most recently I've read an article on
Rolling Stone about how Michelle
Bachman's hometown has created an environment where suicides are more
common among gays and the hostile attitudes toward them.
What the hell is wrong with these people? Look, I can totally understand if you believe that it's a sin because you let a 4,000 year old book written by many different people and mistranslated and misinterpreted many times over tell you how to run your life, but that is no excuse for being cruel.
This is the 21st century. We've come so far, and most of the traditional values of Western culture have been outmoded by the new technologies and life experiences available to us. We've learned how to combat racism and sexism, and those those who stood for "traditional slavery" and "traditional gender roles" are now seen as bigots and progenitors of outdated and harmful beliefs. I say it's about time we put the progenitors of "traditional sexuality" in the same light.
People don't choose to be gay. That's who they are. I never chose to be straight, it's the way I grew up. Nobody is trying to make me gay, and I don't believe that we should make gay people straight. That would be like force-feeding someone their least favorite food until they pretend to like it.
You believe that gay people will go to Hell? Fine! Let them go to whatever Hell you believe in, but for now, treat them with decency and respect. There are thousands of religions worldwide, but the only thing we know exists is the real world. Learn to put the real world first and think about what the right thing to do would be without any preconceptions based on religion.
