The Things I Learned this Semester
My observations during my last full-time semester at UMBC.
The list below comprises some of the things that I learned this semester. Feel free to add your own. Nyan.
Wearing mismatched socks is not only OK, it is awesome - if wearing awesome socks.
Biology students cannot think linearly.
The phrase "These data" really gets on my nerves.
Students at this university not only cheat, they have no concept of what cheating actually is.
There is a Diet Mt. Dew dispenser in the commons near the chinese place.
The blue plate special at the admin building cafe is almost always good.
The view from the roof of the admin building is amazing.
Being the one to give a speech *immediately after* Dr. Hrabowski is a terrifying - and fulfilling - experience.
Rainbows are bad (for displaying continuous variables in a data visualization). Use a fixed hue and vary saturation or lightness instead.
I am terrified of greek letters.
Those weird looking black chairs in the new library study space have a soporific effect.
The only thing worse than 9am classes is an 8am final exam.
Sometimes the class that you were dreading the most turns out to be your favorite.
Sometimes the class that you were looking forward to the most turns out to be the one you dread.
College recruiters lie.
Teaching can be a lot of fun, but only if the students try. The students who do not try are not only frustrating, they are heartbreaking.
The new flooring on the first floor of Math/Psych doesn't squeak when your shoes are wet.
The Grill (in the commons) pours hot water over burgers that have been sitting out for too long to keep them moist. Eww.
The lost and found in the commons really does work thanks to awesome people.
Parking still sucks.
