Attack of the Theocrats!
How the religious right harms us all
posted almost 13 years ago
Have you ever been frustrated hearing political candidates use the phrases "Christian nation" or "Christian values" when talking about the United States? Have you ever been concerned that the religious right is trying to infringe on our fundamentally secular government? Ever thought about why the word "God" never appears in our Constitution, but our money says "In God We Trust"? Why is church/state separation important?
Tomorrow on campus, the Secular Student Alliance will be hosting a talk by Sean Faircloth, a renowned secular activist and author of the book Attack of the Theocrats: How the Religious Right Harms Us All and What You Can Do About It. Whether or not you agree with the message, this is sure to be an interesting talk and discussion.
WHEN: Wednesday, 11/30, 7-9PM
WHERE: Administration Building, Room 101 (Formerly LH3)
FREE EVENT!
While much of the public debate in the United States over church-state issues has focused on the construction of nativity scenes in town squares and the addition of "under God" to the Pledge, Sean Faircloth, who served ten years in the Maine legislature and is now Director of Strategy & Policy for the U.S. Richard Dawkins Foundation, moves beyond the symbolism to explore the many ways federal and state legal codes privilege religion in law in his book "Attack of the Theocrats: How the Religious Right Harms Us All and What to Do About It."
Books will be available for sale at $20 (cash or check), and there will be a book signing after the event. All students and the public are welcome.
What do you think? Is it important to fight for the separation of church and state?
