The imitation firearms were seized in Huntingdon, Cambs., last week, prompting the police to issue a warning yesterday (Tues) to other youngsters not to carry replica guns. The weapons are compressed air-guns, designed for 'airsoft' shooting games, and fire plastic BB pellets. They have been modified to look like an Armalite M15 assault rifle and a long barrelled sniper rifle and were taken from two unnamed teenagers. Inspector Vic Galpin of Cambridgeshire police said: ''These airsoft guns are regularly designed to look like the real thing but these are two of the most realistic imitations I have ever seen. ''We would like to send a strong message that these can only be legally used at areas dedicated to airsoft and paintball activities. ''As well as facing possible fines and prosecution, anyone found carrying these items in public is placing themselves in danger. ''In certain circumstances, like poor light, these guns could easily be mistaken for the real thing and after giving a clear warning officers have a duty to disarm anyone who refuses to comply.'' Under the 2003 Anti-Social Behaviour Act it is a criminal offence to possess or use any kind of replica weapon, loaded or otherwise, in a public place. Airsoft weapons should only be used in specific gaming venues. No further action was taken against the Cambridgeshire teenagers, but possession of an imitation firearm can carry a penalty of up to five years in prison.
