Data falsification worse than plagiarism

What are people's thoughts on this? I personally am appalled.
You can blame the peer-review system for not catching it. But can we design a peer-review system that catches intentional falsifying of data?
I'd be interested in knowing how many publications were tainted by his false data.
While plagiarism is an awful thing, I think falsification of research data is worse.
