what describes fashion in your eyes?

Living in a society where relationships and connections are key I feel as clothes are tools to help you portray what you feel is most important about yourself in order to develop those connections you find necessary. But what is fashion in your eyes, is it just something fun or is more than that? Also do you think there are key points or guidelines to being fashionable? If so list a couple.
