The role of a consumer in American society
It's link to our obsession with change
There were comments in the other threads that made me wonder “What do people think their role is as a consumer?” Why do they think someone having a complaint about a product means they should stop buying it? But, what would happen to America if consumers’ only reaction was to stop buying things when they didn’t like the product. If no one said anything, but all of us had the same complaint what would happen? We’d all stop buying the product. The business that sold that product wouldn’t have any money. Without money a business can’t survive. A complaint is a positive thing for a business, and any smart businessman listens to complaints/feedback/comments/advice from the customer. Not listening could mean he ends up no longer being a businessman. That is where the phrase “The customer is always right” comes from. It means you need to listen to your consumers.
The thing I worry about as an American is why people are wondering about this. Don’t you know our country’s history? How did this nation even come to be? What did your US history classes teach you about us? The country started because someone wanted change. They didn’t like something enough that they wanted it to change. It wouldn’t change, so they took drastic measures to find a way to change it themselves. It’s all throughout our history. The idea of not liking something and changing it is basically an American value and a huge part of our culture.
How did the revolution that freed the American colonies from England even start? Did Americans just not complain and pay the tax?
What about rights for women?
Did American women just keeping suffering without their suffrage?
Did Rosa Parks stand up and let someone else take her seat? Did Martin Luther King Jr not complain loudly
to all of America? So much that someone
shot him just to make him be quiet. Didn’t
do them much good though did it? I bet Obama is making them role in their grave.
Did Henry Ford listen to the people who probably laughed at him because he wanted to make a “horseless carriage”? He made something that the entire world uses now. And even though America is the country of origin for the car, other people were able to change it so well that now Japan, S.Korea, and Germany are selling our own idea back to us.
What about the brothers in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina? “First in Flight” They like to rub it in our faces so much it’s on their license plates. Now there is a change that is really used “around the world”.
Did Bill Gates listen to anyone who thought his idea was dumb?
Seeing a need for change is something we Americans do
naturally. America wouldn’t be what it
is today if every American just said “O, don’t worry. This is fine”. When you try to change something, you are
trying to make it better. If changing
things is what Americans do, then that means we are all about making things
better. How many Americans don’t think
they live in the best country in the world?
With all the immigrants, legal and illegal, that come here, I’d say we
must be doing something right.
So I say "Yes We Can". Yes we can be able to NOT pay too much for higher education. Yes we can be able to not waste our energy and time taking classes we do not need. If we can get to those jobs faster, we could be making good money sooner. Yes we can find a way to make universities realize who we students are as their consumers and the obligation they have to us. That's our right as consumers and Americans.
Some college students tried to stop wars. We can't even try to get a discount?
