Drop dates at UMBC
The drop dates are ridiculous. Here's why

The drop dates at this school are absolutely ridiculous, and I'm a senior. I am almost positive that the core reason the drop dates are right at the beginning of the semester is for financial reasons to the University. I'm not here to start trouble I just want to point something out.
Most professors will NEVER give any exam or weighted assignment before 9/14 (yes the drop date without a w is today) and therefore you as a student, have absolutely no way whatsoever to gauge your class. You have considerable time to drop with a 'w' on your transcript, but the school already has your money at this point so they really don't care what you do.
Here's my proposal. Why doesn't UMBC change the drop date (without a w) to something like 10/1, drop date with a w to 11/1, and afterward no drops allowed?
UMBC has an atrocious graduation rate and I'm willing to bet its partially because people become exhausted at either using up their attempts to take a course, or it simply becomes too unrealistic to complete a major because of how much money he/she has lost. If the drop dates all got shifted a month, UMBC would bring in less revenue but the graduation rate would skyrocket.
You can argue both sides to the issue, yet the fact remains that the drop dates are slated to bring money into the university. Most schools have early drop dates.
What are your thoughts on the matter?
