Hello UMBC! My name is Sara Kim and I am a junior majoring in Psychology and am also obtaining a Media and Communications certificate. I am currently the Treasurer of The Communicators, a Resident Assistant in Potomac Hall, and a ticket staffer for the Commons.

I am excited to announce on myUMBC that I am running for SGA Treasurer for the upcoming 2015 - 2016 school year.

Students here at UMBC have a significant role in cultivating and enhancing the campus culture. I enjoy learning about what motivates students to get involved on campus and to hear about their various passions. That is why my campaign slogan is “make UMBC ours”. My Treasurer campaign is not just about me and my personal desires for the SGA. I understand that every single undergraduate student here has the opportunity to voice out their personal desires and to accomplish their initiatives. I want to assist them as SGA Treasurer.

Previous SGA Experience: I became a First Year Ambassador on the Finance Board in Fall 2013. I was then appointed as a Finance Board Representative in Spring 2013. I ran for Finance Board Representative in the 2013 SGA Elections and received the highest number of votes out of my fellow candidates. During my sophomore year of college, I was nominated by my fellow board members and elected as both the Summer Chair and Chair of the Finance Board.

My platforms are as follows:

1. Lower student fees

1. Increase the awareness and the purpose of the Student Fee Advisory Board by publicizing on UMBC SGA’s social media platforms and myUMBC

2. Ask for the SFAB members to write minutes during their meetings and have the minutes be easily accessible to UMBC students

2. Be the direct Liaison between the Finance Board and student organizations

1. Work with the Financial Support Team to expand the online Treasurer training process so student organization leaders fully understand the allocation request process and deadlines, know the structure of the Finance Board and how they should present their allocation requests, and to be aware of the other financial resources that they have available to them like GiveCorps

2. Work with Finance Board members to conduct “Finance Board 101” seminars for student organization members who are unfamiliar with the board and its process

3. Increase the transparency of both the SGA budget and the Finance Board budget and expedite communication to student organizations

1. Once the SGA budget has been approved by the Finance Board and Senate this academic year, I plan to upload the budget onto the UMBC SGA website

2. Send weekly Finance Board budget updates to student organizations via e-mail and to also start a SGA Treasurer column on the Student Org Leaders newsletter featuring the latest news on Treasurer duties and other pertinent information

A part of my campaign is a feature titled “Students of UMBC”. It is inspired by the popular Humans of New York blog and features numerous UMBC undergraduate students who state their major, campus involvement, and reasons why they are endorsing me for SGA Treasurer.
