#BankOntheBest AMA: Belawoe Akwakoku for Treasurer
An Open and Honest Discussion about the Future of UMBC SGA
posted over 9 years ago
Hello UMBC !
My name is Belawoe Akwakoku and I am a candidate for SGA Treasurer. I am a junior pursuing a degree in Health Administration and Policy Program and a member of the Honors College. I am a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, a member of College Democrats and African Students Association and Treasurer of the UMBC American Red Cross Club. I have served as a Resident Assistant in Susquehanna Hall for the past two years.
I am a former First Year Ambassador and a former SGA Senator. As a senator I served on the Student Fee Advisory Board, and successfully advocated for the return of the UMBC transit bus route to downtown Baltimore.
This election season, we've heard a lot talk about how candidates are going to keep fees low, expand parking and expand the hours of the library and the RAC. These ideas sound great but there has not been a concrete and detailed plan presented to the public on how these candidates are going to keep their promises.
I can't promise everything but I can promise that I will not say anything to get elected and I won't compromise my integrity to earn your vote. I believe that UMBC deserves a Treasurer who is always honest with them and can work with anyone to improve our campus community.

I hope you #BankOntheBest !
Three Things You Can Bank On!
1. Collaboration Among Student Organizations
If elected as Treasurer, the first item on my agenda will be to host a meeting among all student organization Presidents and Treasurers to discuss their plans for the coming year. This collaborative strategy encourages communication among student organizations, leading to a creative exchange of ideas.
2. Communication of Finance Board Funds
After each meeting of the SGA's Finance Board, there will be a weekly budget update sent to the executive boards of all clubs and student organizations. This update will include the amount of money that has been allocated from the budget during the Finance Board meeting. This ensures that all clubs are aware of the amount of money available to student organizations and the constraints (and possibilities) of the student budget.
3. Expansion of the Student Fee Advisory Board
The Student Fee Advisory Board (SFAB) is a student-led organization that reviews recommendations made by various administrators concerning fee increases. If elected, I would expand the membership of this board to include all UMBC Undergrads - not just members of SGA. I feel that this is an important step to take because all students are affected by fees. I also hope to more openly publish and communicate the information from meetings of the SFAB.
