AMA: Bentley and Kelly for SGA!
Ask me anything!
posted over 9 years ago
My name is Bentley Corbett-Wilson and I'm running for SGA President alongside Kelly Robier. This is your chance to ask us anything about our platform, our vision, or us in general!
I am a Junior here at UMBC stuDYING Music Education. Being a music major has led me to be a continuous member of multiple music ensembles. I'm also a Student Director for the UMBC Pep Band! Some various leadership positions that I've held include: Director of Leadership Development of SGA, Event Programmer for (seb), and Student Life Ambassador.
I believe that SGA should have leaders who represent a wide population of the campus, and Kelly and I have done fantastic job of doing so over the past three years. We're both ambitious, Our platform includes..
- Creating a Red Card swipe program to increase attendance at sporting events by incentivizing students who do attend, and using those incentives as discounts at the Bookstore.
- Expanding Library hours during the weekend.
- Subsidize Commonvision printing.
- Creating/amending a Tailgate Policy that allows organizations to tailgate before athletic events.
- Increasing Mental Health awareness by creating a more structured and permanent Mental Health Committee. We intend to do that by collaborating with UHS, the Counseling Center, the Psychology Department, SGA's Department of Health and Wellness, Mental Health Interns, Active Minds, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
- Addressing sexual violence on campus by working with student advocates, Women’s Center, and Green Dot to implement a Peer Responder/Mentoring Training Program. We also want to reevaluate the current language of sexual assault policy at UMBC, including adding language concerning LGBTQIA students.
- We want to strive to increase the quality of Chartwells Dining Services and UMBC's sustainability initiatives. We believe that by investing in local agriculture we are investing in Maryland. Environmental sustainability is not just an important issue to us, but to our University as a whole after President Hrabowski signed the President's Climate Change Commitment. By buying locally we can reduce the pollution from transportation of our food and we can also decrease our carbon emissions as a campus. We are ready and willing to take any suggestions from students regarding dining on campus, where you can best be heard on the Dining Services Student Satisfaction Survey in October.
- Our platform allows for a lot of fluidity. Some of the above platforms include ideas we've received from students very recently! There are many possible ways for campus to improve, and we want your input on what we should change!
From Kelly's and my involvement, we have established many connections at UMBC and have learned TONS from effectively communicating the efforts and initiatives of departments and organizations to the UMBC community. I've helped in the efforts to create the rotational schedule for the late night/weekend Commons dining option; I also held a major part in getting bike sharing on campus, which is now a successful program led by the Athletic Department. Kelly's experiences with programming and aiding with various campaigns have shaped her to be sharp and tenacious, two important characteristics of a capable leader. Kelly and I have used these experiences and connections to make sure that our initiatives are feasible; some of them have already begun to happen! As dedicated UMBC students, we believe that we will be able to lead with integrity, charisma, and diligence to make sure your voice counts!
