Late Opening and Clearing the Snow
UMBC slacking on clearing snow from campus
posted almost 10 years ago
This isn't another post about road conditions. I couldn't care less about that. What does irk me, however, is the lack of (or slow) progress UMBC has shown this morning in clearing the snow from campus.
At the time of this writing, 11:00 AM, most of the student walkways I have seen are still covered with 3 inches of snow. Yet, UMBC is opening at 12:00 PM. That means that classes that start are 12:00 are being held. Which also means that students will begin to arrive on campus, for their 12:00 classes, about now. Yet sidewalks are not clear, walkways are not clear, and many of the parking lots are not clear! Most of the sideways haven't even been started on, despite the several dozen sets of footprints on most walkways. And lets not even get started on the outdoor stairs.
So, to the UMBC Admin, you made a poor decision. Stairs, walkways/sidewalks, and parking lots should be 90% clear by this time, they should be "almost done", NOT "just getting started". It is absolutely ridiculous that officials are opening campus at 12 with the unsafe conditions that are presently on campus.
I would have no issues IF there were safe walking conditions - if safe conditions existed on campus I would have had no problem starting the day normally. But UMBC is slacking on their responsibility for student safety ON CAMPUS. That is intolerable.
EDIT: Obviously, as I am a commuter, I didn't walk around campus searching out walkways. That means that I have no clue what the areas around the dorms look like.
Also, at 11:42, most doors to the buildings are STILL locked. Way to go, UMBC.
