Petition to establish and enforce better grading policies
UMBC needs more efficient and timely grade distribution
posted almost 10 years ago
Grades are the clearest indicator to a college student about his/her performance in a particular class. Grades help us realize where we, as students who are learning new materials, made mistakes and what we need to improve on as we go forward. Grades also serve as a motivating factor for students. Seeing an A on a project you worked hard for, or an exam you studied days for will make you proud of your accomplishment and motivate you to keep working hard and will give you a sense of success. At the same time a bad grade will serve as a wake up call to make you realize you need to work harder or seek help in order to do well. In our educational system grades are, quite frankly, everything. So why then are we denied this service or forced to wait and wait until the grade isn't really useful, but instead just there? Why are we forced to play a guessing game of ifs and maybes to hypothesize some estimated grade during finals week when we could instead be studying if we knew before hand where we stood in a class? Why do we login to our student accounts every day during break, go to our grade terminals and see the same old empty slots where a letter is supposed to be? Students deserve the right to know their grades in a timely and efficient manner where their grades can mean something to them and not just be a letter that while finally released, no longer serves them any benefit because it is already too late to be of any use.
UMBC needs to ESTABLISH and ENFORCE more efficient grading policies that professors MUST follow, and it must provide professors with necessary resources such as assistants and programs to allow them to grade student's assignments quickly and efficiently and have grades posted with proper weighting to Blackboard in a timely manner. In addition every student should have his/her current grade in a class prior to the Midterm, and final exam.
We as students pay tuition for these services and for most of us we are being robbed of what we are paying for.
Grades matter. Let's get them back.
