Gratitude during exam week
Exams and opinions
posted almost 10 years ago
I'm up here hanging out between exams, and I hear people complaining about what a terrible school this is and how much it "sucks". I'm the first to admit, in life very few, if any, of the places one spends their time will be perfect. But I feel the need to express my opinion here, with the caveat that I know that the conversations I've overheard are not representative of the entire student body here, and are likely not even representative of a majority of UMBC students. So here it goes: In my opinion, this is a better than average, if not great, school- in a very cosmopolitan, culturally rich part of the world to boot. To hear people complaining about the opportunity that is attending college- especially at a university of this caliber in this area, is more than a little saddening to me. So many people throughout the world, even in our own country, can't dream of being at a school like this. I've lived among, worked alongside, and attended school with so many people who will likely never see such an opportunity due to socioeconomic status, age, or simply the fickle nature of circumstance. I really feel sorry for others whose worlds are so small, whose standards are so bourgeois and unreasonable. I try not to judge others, and if there's a point to my post it's this; if exams are getting you down, or you don't feel fulfilled in your program, or you're just having a bad day- sometimes practicing a little gratitude can be more constructive than throwing out bad energy into the world. UMBC is a great school, and each and every one of us students worked hard to earn our spot here- not everyone is so lucky.
Good luck with exams all, and please don't flame me too badly. I'm a new student here, and thought that this was an appropriate outlet for a concern I've had for a while about something related to our campus community.
