Longboarding on Campus
No Longboarding in the Academic Area?
I have recently purchased a longboard for my use in getting to classes around campus and so far have been told twice by the same UMBC Police Officer that skateboarding in the academic area is prohibited. I have passed several other officers that have not mentioned anything and I fail to find anything online the says skateboarding in the academic area is actually prohibited.
I have however found two very helpful sources:
http://www.umbc.edu/sjp/articles/articleVb.html
An excerpt from this page pertaining to skateboarding/longboarding:
Also,
http://www.umbc.edu/sjp/articles/articleVb.html
Which states:
17. Skateboarding, Rollerblading, or Rollerskating in or Near a University Building.
This rule prohibits, but is not limited to, the following:
a) use of a skateboard, rollerblades, bicycles or rollerskates in a manner that may cause damage to University property; or
b) use of a wheeled device around University buildings in a manner that may cause injury to pedestrians.
I see that both sites state specifically "in a manner that may cause injury damage to University property... [or] use of a wheeled device around University buildings in a manner that may cause injury to pedestrians. So I take it if you are going slowly through the upper level of academic row at noon when there is no one around... no one is in danger of injury let alone at other times of the day. I feel that as the rules are written, longboarding in the academic area with control is completely allowed.
Anyone have the same issue or have any feelings on the topic? Please share.
