Span 101 or 102? A Life or Death Decision!
posted over 13 years ago
Hi, I'm Chris Dews, a humble, yet charming theater major, and I seek council or whether or not I should skip 101 and go straight into 102 for the spanish requirement.
I want to skip to 102. Here's the deal:
THE GOOD:
I took two years of spanish a reservoir high school and A'ced both without a single ounce of trouble, in fact, I was top of my class.
Rate my professor.com has deemed Mr. Carmody a wonderful professor who is easy to work with, which is a definite Plus
I have the textbook
Also, I have some very strong networking that could allow me a fluent spanish speaking tutor. (However, unpredictable events can happen and the tutor might not work with me)
So, it seems possible but...
THE BAD:
Those two years of spanish were 4 years ago
I'd have no idea where the class is starting from since I have not done the spanish from the supposed previous semester.

All of that said, IS IT A GOOD IDEA?

Refresh yourself, the book we currently use is for 101-201. Then start with 102. 101 covers the textbook through Chapter 4. 102 covers Ch. 5-13. You will get it back quickly, and it is my experience --with the Summer classes-- that the 102 professors will NOT refresh for more than 2 class periods. You can do it on your own though. If you have a tutor, you should be able to prep for 102 just fine. Don't take 103 with Carmody if you aren't willing to put extra work in. He is teaching a refresher, NOT building your foundation. I'm doing the 103 thing right now with more than 4 years since high school Spanish --only 2 years of H.S. Spanish, and I have to do all of the exercises on my own to build the foundation. It's a pain. Don't cut your corners if you want a good grade and a decent language base.
