I Have a Bad Feeling About This
What the Upcoming Star Wars Film Means for the Franchise
posted over 10 years ago
As many of you may know, yesterday was Star Wars Day, much of it focused on promoting the upcoming Star Wars film published by Disney and directed by J.J. Abrams. As more info comes to light on the cast and staff for the upcoming film, the chances that the film will resurrect the franchise only seem better. (Keep in mind that the maligned prequel trilogy was made before Lucas was acquired by Disney.) So many of you may wonder why I chose the title I did for this post. Short answer: It's something elsewhere, elusive. Long answer: Well, there are two reasons...
First off, every major American media creator that has recently been bought out has been done so by Disney. This may not be a bad thing, in that Disney is moving away from "kiddy" content overall and it gives more potential for crossovers, but you know Disney's stance on copyright, and it appears not to be easing up.
Second thing, until the buyout by Disney, Star Wars was the only American media franchise that officially sanctioned fan works, and one of only two worldwide, the other being the Japanese Touhou Project. Knowing Disney's aforementioned stance on copyright, that will likely change soon... or perhaps it already has, unknown to me. Now, fan works aren't necessarily a good thing: look at the massive volumes of horrible MLP and Sonic fan work. But with fan work, fans have the chance to interpret the franchise their own way and not follow the strict plotline laid out by the original creators, and thus can enjoy the franchise more deeply, and if it's officially sanctioned, skilled creators can join in without fear of copyright takedown and add worthwhile fan works to the fandom.
But enough of me talking: what do you guys think? Will Disney crack down on Star Wars fan culture? Will the film actually be a comeback from the prequel trilogy? Overall, what do you think is the future of Star Wars?
