To all Pre-Med/DO/M.D./Ph.D. Students
A Medical Fraternity may be coming to UMBC
Hello, everyone, my name is Ally. I am a student at UMBC just like all of you.
I am posting this regarding all Pre-medical students at UMBC.
I have recently come across a fraternity called Phi Delta Epsilon. It was my friend who was initiated as a member at University of Pittsburgh, so I researched about the fraternity further. I came to realize that Phi Delta Epsilon is the oldest and one of the only two medical fraternity in the United States that originated from Cornell Medical School. The medical fraternity started back in 1904, and it will be celebrating its 110th anniversary this year.
Fast forward to 2014, the fraternity is all over the country, and it stands to help students in need of guidance to get into medical school and help them to become, well, doctors. The fraternity provides mentorship from established doctors and medical students, and it is in partnership with various hospitals across the country, including Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. If the fraternity is established at UMBC, one of our goals will be supporting the Children's Center at JHH.
I have been talking to the CEO of the fraternity and many talented students from Cornell, Berkeley, American University, and UCLA, and I am thrilled to say that the International Board of Phi Delta Epsilon has approved me to start an interest group at UMBC. However, there are many steps to take before it can be official at UMBC. I am working on getting university recognition, which is required before the interest group can be official.
If you are interested in bringing Phi Delta Epsilon to UMBC, please email me at op19496@umbc.edu.
Meanwhile, here are some fun facts of the fraternity that will get you thinking.
- The statistics show that 92% of the members of Phi Delta Epsilon get into medical schools - 100% in many individual chapters.
- Dual memberships are welcomed - In fact, 60% of Cornell's chapter is a member of another fraternity/sorority.
- The brotherhood does not end after your years at UMBC. You are a member for a lifetime. You will get access and network as a medical student AND as an established physician.
- If it is established, you will be a member of the founding class.
