Golden Gate Chinese and the Hair Incident
a hairy situation
posted over 10 years ago
Tonight I was craving some Chinese food and settled on Golden Gate, a place I've been going to since I was a freshman (their General Tsao's Tofu is super good!). I went to pick it up and decided to eat it back in my dorm. Halfway through my rice, however, I looked down and discovered a long black hair that was definitely NOT mine.
I immediately stopped eating the rest of my food (tofu & broccoli), threw it away, and grabbed the rice & my receipt to drive back to the restaurant. I explained the situation to the worker there, showing him the rice with the hair along with my receipt, and was met with rudeness that was totally uncalled for. He was getting angry, repeating over and over that the store's policy was to not do returns for food unless the food was present, so I told him I would wait for the owner to return (she was out picking up her daughter from somewhere).
I could hear him go to the back and call her, screaming into the phone while I sat there holding my hairy rice. A few minutes later, the owner came in and rushed up to me. She grabbed the rice and immediately started accusing me of just wanting a free meal. I told her I threw away the food and understood that it may appear that way, but that I actually was too grossed out to eat anything. She said she wouldn't give me any money back, but would have replaced my meal if I would go back home and bring it back to the restaurant (meaning dig it out of the trash can).
I was totally flabbergasted that she was reacting this way and said wouldn't it be easier to just give me the money back than have me tell people about this? That's when she started raising her voice to me, accused me of PLANTING THE HAIR (! i have short brown hair!), and saying that I must do this all the time to different restaraunts. I realized I had lost this fight and left.
I'm pretty upset about this and wouldn't normally make a big deal about something like this, especially because the owners are usually such nice people running a small business, but I'm completely shocked that I was treated this way. Even offering me a gift card or something if they were convinced I was lying would be a better business move than accusing a loyal customer of stealing. I just wanted to share this so maybe people will think about taking their business elsewhere, I hear Hunan Taste is good?
