To UMBC's Muslim Community
posted over 13 years ago
After Osama bin Laden's death, you all may have witnessed some bigotry on myUMBC. Hateful comments that are an insult to your beliefs and consequently to you.
I will start off by saying that, no, I am not Muslim. I am not Christian. I consider myself agnostic. And while I don't typically agree with many beliefs of many religions, I am always open to understanding these beliefs and religions.
And so, I would like to apologize on behalf of all those who made such inappropriate comments. You deserve respect just as much as anyone else.
Just know that there are many UMBC students and faculty that respect you as people and are also offended by such comments.
I preach tolerance to those who have little chance of becoming accepting despite their differing views.
Sexual orientation, ethnicity, sex, gender, class... Discrimination is society's worst enemy.
So no matter who you are, what you like to do, what you prefer to wear, who you prefer to kiss, what you can and cannot afford, what color your skin is, what country you hail from, or what you believe in, so long as you respect others, you gain my respect, and the respect of many others, in return.
(This post's comment section has been blocked because I do not want to run the risk of bigotry and hate spreading to something preaching acceptance. Sorry Erik. Not this time.)
