Commons Children's Joy Foundation Charity Scam
Charity scammers in the Commons. Do NOT donate!
posted over 10 years ago
Recently, there have been some Filipino women in the commons asking for donations to the Children's Joy Foundation that help kids in the Philippines. This is a FAKE charity! It does not exist. There are even several fake websites up that accept PayPal.
My boyfriend originally told me that he had run into them and donated, even though he wasn't sure whether they were legitimate or not. When we Googled the Children's Joy Foundation, we found the fake website and an assortment of news articles about the scam at other colleges. We didn't bother to post, because we figured that they had probably moved on.
Today, I ran into one of the women during dinner. When my friends and I explained that we didn't have any cash, the woman told us that they also take credit cards. She wanted us to write down our card information and the amount we wanted to donate. I've done charity collections, and I know that this is absolutely illicit. I immediately told her we weren't interested, but she continued to push for another couple of minutes before we got really annoyed. She left immediately after I seriously told her that she needed to leave.
If you see these women, DO NOT DONATE to them, and call campus police! They are scamming you. If you truly feel the need to donate to children in the Philippines, there are plenty of legitimate charities to give to.
If you've already donated to these women, I'm sorry, but there's really nothing you can do as far as I'm aware.
Remember, always make sure that a charity is legitimate BEFORE you donate, and NEVER give your card info to any non-encrypted source. Keep you and your money safe. Thank you for reading.
