UMBC Bazaar "Official Reseller" Election
a blade of grass could also cut through the myriad of stars
posted almost 11 years ago
How would you like to have a Bazaar at UMBC, a place to chill, promote your student org, or just engage in fun activities?
There is a critical need to establish a tradition for UMBC.
Fortunately, our idea, Non-disciplinary Bazaar, could be turned into a
tradition.
Comparison of other Universities' traditions and UMBC's traditions:
Harvard University
Primal Scream - At midnight on the last night of reading period and before final exams begin, students streak through the Old Yard.
Columbia University
Full moon on the quad - seniors kiss freshman and give them a rose, though presently members from all grades tend to kiss each other freely.
University of Maryland, Baltimore County
- Alma mater
- True Grit
- Magazine
- Make UMBC your own
- Homecoming
Not only are they dull, but also really can't be considered traditions.
FAQ
1. What is a Non-disciplinary Bazaar?
The Bazaar is a place where people could trade, chill, relax,
advocate, hold club meetings and so on.
Note: we would expand it based on people's comments/concerns and current/future trends and needs.
Note: we would expand it based on people's comments/concerns and current/future trends and needs.
2. What is in the Bazaar?
The Bazaar, which would be held in the quad, contains 4
sections, including but not limited to, trade, advocation, presentation,
and activity.
① The trade section will have students selling multicultural
foods, books, and any other creative things that you can think of. Eg. fresh fruit smoothie, barbecue, and etc.
② The advocating section will have students and visitors
advocating their religions, political views, sharing their thoughts, discussing
about philosophies. Instead of each party striving to get more followers than
the others, though, we’d also ask each party to talk to other parties with
different point of views. This way, religion for example, Buddhists would
appreciate many of the things that Christians have to say and vice versa,
because at the deep level, they’re saying somewhat different things, but they
are saying things that don’t contradict each other.
③ The presentation section will especially provide an
opportunity for students to present works unrelated to their majors.
④ Lastly, the activity section will have all sorts of
activities such as fundraising, awareness raising, spikeball, and etc.
Our Non-disciplinary Bazaar idea will be greatly beneficial to
the entire UMBC community, because it offers everyone a chance to open up and
reveal their ideas to one another and share a campus-wide sentiment of learning
that transcends all fields of study, and all other boundaries. Many times
students in college don't feel as though they have clear passions or vision for
the future, they're still unsure about where their life is headed, nor do they
feel they have much chance to express themselves. But with this free market, our
campus will be much more closely knit and communicative, and students will be
strongly encouraged to develop ideas and passions and create their vision for
the future. Many times students feel as though they are restricted to one
discipline, one community, one field of knowledge and one direction for the
future. But now, they will be able to open their minds as they get involved.
They will learn to get expressive, share their interests, and make a positive
impact in the world.
Our first inspiration derived from not seeing much campus activities on the grass fields in campus. It’s such a waste to not use the space, there should be something open to and can be seen by all students instead of a lab inside a building that only a small amount of students of a particular major know about. Our second inspiration derived from a conversation between several scholars about humanity, society, morality, and future. There’s a need to push campus student involvement/cohesion and increase non-disciplinary activities.
