Congratulations to Daniel Miller and Colten Peterson on their Promotions

Congratulations to Daniel Miller (613/UMBC) and Colten
Peterson (613/UMBC), who both were promoted from Postdoctoral Research
    Associate to Assistant Research Scientist!

Drs. Miller and Peterson work in NASA Goddard's Climate and Radiation Laboratory (Code 613) with a focus on remote sensing of clouds. We asked each of
them to discuss their research, what inspires them, and how they spend their
    free time.

Daniel Miller:

"I work on both spectral and polarimetric remote sensing of
liquid cloud droplet microphysics using NASA instruments like MODIS/VIIRS and,
more recently, now the PACE mission. The shape of the cloud top droplet size
distribution largely determines the radiative impact of clouds as well as their
ability to grow large enough to transition to droplet sizes large enough to
precipitate and modulate the water cycle.

I’m very excited about the ability of the PACE mission and
specifically UMBC’s contributed instrument HARP2 to constrain the full droplet
size distribution shape – something we haven’t been able to do until now at a
satellite pixel level. (See image below.)

In my free time, I host a lot of community events (trivia,
board game night, etc.) in my small Baltimore neighborhood of Union Square."

Photo: This is the PACE HARP2 “first-light” image showing cloudbows. The original caption reads: “Early images from PACE’s HARP2 polarimeter captured data on clouds over the west coast of South America on Mar. 11, 2024. The polarimetry data can be used to determine information about the cloud droplets that make up the cloudbow – a rainbow produced by sunlight reflected by cloud droplets instead of rain droplets. Scientists can learn how the clouds respond to man-made pollution and other aerosols and can measure the size of the cloud droplets with this polarimetry data. Credit: UMBC.”

Colten Peterson:

"My research involves spaceborne and airborne remote sensing
of clouds, using a variety of techniques, and how cloud-radiation interactions
influence Earth’s energy budget. I am involved in the development of cloud and
radiation products for the NASA MODIS and VIIRS satellite instruments, and for
the upcoming NASA decadal satellite mission, the Atmospheric Observing System
(AOS). I am particularly interested in polar regions due to the challenges
associated with characterizing polar clouds with remote sensing and determining
the impacts of clouds on the polar surface energy balance. I recently
participated in the 2024 NASA ARCSIX airborne campaign in Greenland, where I
was responsible for planning science flights and developing cloud and radiation
science products from airborne remote sensing imagery taken during the
    campaign.

Overall, my work interests me because I am passionate about
understanding and safeguarding Earth. I find a deep meaning in supporting NASA
satellite and airborne missions that aim to better understand the Earth, which
is a major reason why I chose my career path.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time in nature, hanging
out with my dog, rock climbing, and playing music."

Responding to Recent Executive Orders and Actions

<Tagline>An Update from the Division of Institutional Equity</Tagline>

Dear UMBC Community,

I want to express my thanks to the many of you who have reached out to me in recent days to voice their concerns and ask about the current and future state of the work of the Division of Institutional Equity in light of recent federal orders and actions. Your support is an inspiring demonstration of our shared values, most especially, inclusive excellence.

As you may know, late on Friday evening, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) issued a Dear Colleague letter that put forth a very broad interpretation of the Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, which ended race-conscious admissions. The Dear Colleague letter interprets that ruling to prohibit all race-conscious activities at educational institutions that receive federal funding—“hiring, promotion, compensation, financial aid, scholarships, prizes, administrative support, discipline, housing, graduation ceremonies, and all other aspects of student, academic, and campus life.”

A Dear Colleague letter does not carry the force of law, nor can it change existing law. We have and will continue to abide by existing laws, including through the university’s nondiscrimination policy. Higher education associations responded swiftly to the Dear Colleague letter this week, urging institutions not to overreact or try to comply preemptively with the guidance.

OCR’s Dear Colleague letter followed several recent federal executive orders and other actions targeting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility efforts broadly. Some of these are being challenged in the courts. Additionally, Maryland State Attorney General Anthony G. Brown, together with 15 other state attorneys general, have issued this multistate guidance on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility employment initiatives.

We take seriously the direct targeting of this work, which is so central to our identity and core values. We are monitoring closely the orders and actions related to these issues and assessing as best we can the risk and potential impacts for UMBC. We also are continuing to hold UMBC to the highest standards in adhering to university policies and applicable state and federal laws.

To that end, I want to reiterate that all of the university’s programs and activities are open for full participation by all individuals, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or any other protected category under applicable federal law, state law, and the university's nondiscrimination policy.

Who we are as an institution demands that we continue to:

Create a community culture that values each individual

Protect the civil rights of all faculty, staff, and students

Come together across differences

Uphold free speech and academic freedom

This is not the work of a single office or division, but rather the collective responsibility of our entire campus community. Thank you again for your support, your dedication, and your partnership.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR METALS PRODUCTION & PROCESSING

<Tagline>REMINDER: ME Seminar, Fri., 2/21/25, ENG 112, 2:30 p.m.</Tagline>

NOT-TO-BE-MISSED!

Dr. Toni Marechaux from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Energy, U.S. Department of Energy, will be visiting tomorrow to give a seminar. Please see abstract and biography below.

    Abstract:

The concept of a circular economy is influencing more and more materials production and use. While the mining and processing of metals and minerals can be damaging to the environment, their inherent strength, durability, and corrosion properties clearly improve the performance and longevity of products in which they’re used. Metals are infinitely recyclable, with a high value that drives the recovery of such materials at the end of a product life cycle. Many companies are looking to new technologies to help eliminate waste (because any pollution is a product you're not selling!) and increase productivity and efficiency through sustainable processes. From designing products for high performance, durability, and recycling, optimizing the use of raw materials, and capturing and using waste streams, there are many new materials technologies of growing interest. Let's look at both the low-hanging fruit and the long-term research that will move this concept forward.

    Bio:

Dr. Toni Marechaux is an accomplished technology strategist with extensive experience spanning basic research, technology development, management, and leadership. She currently serves as a lead analyst at the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Energy (ARPA-E) in the US Department of Energy and has worked previously for the Defense Science Board, ZIN Technologies, the National Academies of Sciences, the US Department of Energy, NASA, and the National Steel Company. Dr. Marechaux graduated from the University of Illinois with a B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering and from Case Western Reserve University with a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering. She maintains an abiding interest in abolishing barriers to new technology applications and in engineering solutions for sustainable development.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Migration Timeline of HPC Hardware to chip

The DoIT Research Computing Team has deployed a new High-Performance Computing Cluster, chip. This new cluster is better equipped to handle the variety of research workflows than ada or taki. The chip cluster has an updated software stack, redundant and more reliable head nodes, and a high-speed connection to the newly deployed ceph storage cluster which provides more than 2PB of storage within Retriever Research Storage (RRStor).

With the chip cluster now available to contributing faculty, the DoIT Research Computing Team will begin to migrate the older CPU and GPU hardware from ada and taki to chip. The timeline for this migration is separated into three phases.

Phase 1: February 20 - March 2

All users and groups will be duplicated on chip as they exist on ada & taki

Deploy of new RT form for account & group creation on chip

All account, group, and software requests will be redirected to chip

Phase 2: March 3 - April 2

All ada & taki users will be able to login to ada, taki, & chip

Half of the machines from ada & taki will be migrated to chip
