We are currently conducting several important research studies and are in the process of recruiting participants, one of which is the project on cancer pain management for Asian American Breast Cancer Survivors. We wondered if you could share the flyers with your Asian American community.

The following is the summary of the research project:

We are looking for an Asian American woman aged 18 years and older who has had a breast cancer diagnosis in the past; can read and write English, Mandarin Chinese, Korean or Japanese; has access to the Internet; and identifies their sub-ethnicity as Chinese, Korean, or Japanese. Eligible participants who agree to join the study will be randomly assigned to one of the two groups. Depending on the group that you are randomly assigned, you may or may not be asked to use the technology-based program. You will be asked to 1) use the educational information (the American Cancer Society breast cancer survivorship website that is provided by the research team), or 2) participate in the online forum and 1:1 coaching/support program. Participants will be asked to complete a questionnaire three times. Your participation will last about 3 months. After the program is finished, each participant will receive $50 e-gift card, totaling up to $150. Please note that your participation is voluntary, and you can withdraw your participation at any time.

12–1pm EST, Friday, February 28, 2025, online

The resurgence of great power competition, underpinned by rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, necessitates a reevaluation of strategic doctrines akin to the urgency and innovation of the original Manhattan Project. This talk delves into the transformative integration of AI with autonomous combat units, examining historical analogs such as the impact of gunpowder in the Napoleonic Wars and the introduction of tanks and close air support during World War I, and juxtaposing these with the contemporary role of AI in warfare.

We begin by exploring the dual-use nature of AI technologies, emphasizing their role in both enhancing combat effectiveness and posing significant ethical and security risks, as illustrated by recent developments in narrative warfare and the militarization of marketing strategies. Drawing parallels with the disruptive impacts of past technological advances, the presentation invites an evaluation of the strategic implications of autonomous warfare systems, discussing the potential consequences on global security dynamics. Furthermore, the discussion extends to safeguarding democratic processes in the age of AI, where the integrity of elections is increasingly susceptible to AI-driven information warfare. The presentation outlines the development of virtual voting infrastructures and their vulnerabilities, highlighting the ongoing challenges in protecting electoral systems from manipulation.

This examination advocates for robust ethical frameworks and international cooperation to harness AI's potential while mitigating its risks. By reflecting on historical technology shifts and forecasting future developments, the talk aims to widen the dialogue on the strategic, ethical, and policy dimensions necessary to navigate this new era of warfare and surveillance.

    Justin M.
Abstract:

"Multi-angle sensors capture unique information useful for studying clouds, whose 3D radiative effects have traditionally been difficult to characterize. An increasingly popular approach to 3D cloud retrievals is supervised learning, but this requires an external source of data, e.g., radar or lidar. Unsupervised approaches include stereo / disparity-based methods, but these assume all objects are 100% opaque, which is untrue of clouds. An emerging unsupervised approach to 3D cloud reconstruction is neural rendering, in which a 3D scene is represented by a small neural network, and light transport (forward radiative transfer) is modeled with a simple, differentiable renderer. The differentiability of the renderer allows the neural network to be directly optimized to accurately reproduce the observed imagery. The trained neural network can be queried at a dense set of 3D locations to extract the distribution of the attenuating mass in the scene, which maps directly to the extinction parameter. While neural rendering of clouds is an emerging area of interest, applications are currently limited to simulated data. We have applied neural rendering to real data from the Hyper Angular Rainbow Polarimeter (HARP2) aboard PACE. I will summarize some related work, describe our methods, showcase some results, and comment on future challenges in this emerging research area."

Biography:

Sean is a data scientist in the Ocean Ecology Lab (OEL) at GSFC who applies machine learning techniques to remote sensing, with a particular interest in clouds and multi-angle sensors. He received his master’s degree at Georgia Tech in Computer Science with a focus on Machine Learning. Before pivoting to remote sensing, his research focused on object recognition in the autonomous vehicle industry. His lifelong fascination with space and the Earth system motivated him to find an overlap between his background and the contemporary needs at NASA. This led to an internship at OEL, which turned into a second internship, and then a full-time job. At OEL, Sean provides a unique skillset in support of the Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud-ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission, as well as contributing to the Atmosphere Observing System (AOS) mission. Outside of work, Sean plays D&D and board games with his friends, reads sci-fi, and plays piano."

How to Land a Tech Internship

<Tagline>Follow these steps to land your next opportunity.</Tagline>

Internships in the tech industry are highly competitive, but with the right search strategy, you can secure an opportunity that will set you up for future success. Whether you're interested in software development, cybersecurity, data science, IT, or others, here are some key steps to help you land a tech internship.

1. Build a Strong Resume and Portfolio

Tech employers seek candidates with relevant skills and experience. Highlight coursework, personal projects, hackathons, or freelance work that demonstrate your technical abilities. If you’re in software development, create a GitHub profile showcasing your code, add the link to the top with your contact information, and reference aspects of your GitHub throughout your resume. For UI/UX roles, build a portfolio website with your designs and write a narrative about how you completed projects from start to finish.

2. Gain Hands-On Experience

Practical experience is crucial to land a tech internship. If you have yet to land something formalized, consider working on open-source projects, participating in coding competitions, or taking on freelance work. Many companies also offer virtual internships and apprenticeships to help students build experience before applying for formal internships. You can also consider checking out sites like Parker Dewey and Forage.

3. Network with Industry Professionals

Networking plays a huge role in landing tech internships, as you’re 10x more likely to get a job from a referral vs. a cold application. Attend career fairs, tech meetups, and industry conferences to connect with recruiters and professionals in your field. Engage with alumni on Retrievers Connect and LinkedIn, and join student chapters of professional organizations like the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). You can also find professional associations that are relevant to your interests through our Majors Resources page.

4. Apply Early and Strategically

Many tech companies recruit interns months in advance, so it’s wise to start your search earlier than you may think. For example, you can start searching for a summer internship in the fall semester. To help with this process, first go to Handshake to and review its internship postings. Then, you can also use platforms like Steppingblocks, LinkedIn, and company career pages to find openings. Tailor your applications by incorporating keywords and industry jargon to your materials, emphasizing relevant skills and quantifying achievements.

5. Prepare for Both Technical and Traditional Interviews

Most tech internships require technical assessments or coding interviews. Practice with platforms like LeetCode, HackerRank, or CodeSignal, which have free options for students and junior developers. Review common data structures, algorithms, and problem-solving techniques to improve your chances of success. For more traditional interviews you want to make sure you’re prepared to answer questions about yourself, your work, and the role. Practice your responses using Big Interview, or schedule an Interview Prep or Practice Interview appointment with the Career Center.

Time to Take the Next Step
