    <div>
    <strong>Challenge Name:</strong> Panic! At the Kernel</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <div>Yes, it happened again. As I'm sure you're already aware, our company was hit with another ransomware attack. Phishing emails, am I right? Well, we paid the ransom (against my better judgment), and everything was supposed to be fine. But Jenkins decided to be "funny" instead of keeping things professional. He thought it would be hilarious to heckle the ransomware operators. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Turns out, they value their pride almost as much as they value my money, and they activated the ransomware’s self-destruct mechanism. Click, click, boom. Simulated kernel panic. They nuked our critical server into a death spiral of failed reboots. Three times it tried to recover, and three times it crashed again. Now it’s completely stuck, and the poor thing was only up 36 maybe 37 hours. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Fortunately, the ransomware’s seppuku signal uses a toggle mechanism. The same key that brought it down should be able to bring it back up. It’s in the kernel panic syslogs somewhere. Find it, yea? </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>You deal with that and I'll deal with Jenkins.</div>
    </div>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>DM a board member for help if you get stuck.<br><br><a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1L-QoawvFGQvUhK4yhEWhCvWX0-TA-Gbx/view?usp=drive_link">https://drive.google.com/file/d/1L-QoawvFGQvUhK4yhEWhCvWX0-TA-Gbx/view?usp=drive_link</a><br><br>

    <div>The resurgence of great power competition, underpinned by rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, necessitates a reevaluation of strategic doctrines akin to the urgency and innovation of the original <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Project" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Manhattan Project</strong></a>. This talk delves into the transformative integration of AI with autonomous combat units, examining historical analogs such as the impact of gunpowder in the Napoleonic Wars and the introduction of tanks and close air support during World War I, and juxtaposing these with the contemporary role of AI in warfare.</div>
    <div>     We begin by exploring the dual-use nature of AI technologies, emphasizing their role in both enhancing combat effectiveness and posing significant ethical and security risks, as illustrated by recent developments in narrative warfare and the militarization of marketing strategies. Drawing parallels with the disruptive impacts of past technological advances, the presentation invites an evaluation of the strategic implications of autonomous warfare systems, discussing the potential consequences on global security dynamics.  Furthermore, the discussion extends to safeguarding democratic processes in the age of AI, where the integrity of elections is increasingly susceptible to AI-driven information warfare. The presentation outlines the development of virtual voting infrastructures and their vulnerabilities, highlighting the ongoing challenges in protecting electoral systems from manipulation.</div>
    <div>     This examination advocates for robust ethical frameworks and international cooperation to harness AI's potential while mitigating its risks. By reflecting on historical technology shifts and forecasting future developments, the talk aims to widen the dialogue on the strategic, ethical, and policy dimensions necessary to navigate this new era of warfare and surveillance.</div>

<Title>OPTIMIZING ANNUAL ENERGY OUTPUT OF LUMINESCENT SOLAR CONCENTRATORS FOR BUILDING-INTEGRATED PHOTOVOLTAICS</Title>
<Tagline>ME Dept. Seminar:  Fri., Feb. 28, ENG 112, 2:30-3:30 PM</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content">Dr. Diana-Andra Borca-Tasciuc, professor, mechanical, aerospace and nuclear engineering department, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, will be visiting this Friday to give a seminar.  Please see abstract and biography below.<div><br></div>
    <div>
    <u>Abstract</u>:</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <div>Building-integrated photovoltaics are part of the engineering solutions portfolio being developed to address the climate crisis and meet the rapidly evolving decarbonization legislation worldwide. The luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) is a niche solar concentrator technology with the potential to be integrated into building-integrated photovoltaics. It consists of a</div>
    <div>transparent plastic sheet embedded with a luminescent species and lined with solar cells along its edges. Acting as a waveguide, it directs light from its larger surface onto much smaller-area photovoltaics. This technology offers several advantages, including better utilization of solar cells, effective performance in diffuse light conditions, and the ability to serve as a</div>
    <div>multifunctional envelope for vertical walls in the built environment. However, its single-digit efficiency remains a major barrier to commercialization, primarily due to escape cone losses through the light-receiving surface. Additionally, the lack of comprehensive annual energy production estimates in the literature limits understanding of its practical potential. This talk</div>
    <div>examines the performance of wedge-shaped LSCs utilizing inorganic luminescent phosphors, which enhance energy capture at incidence angles that conventional solar panels do not effectively utilize. This behavior is studied experimentally by comparing the performance of a solar cell embedded in an LSC to one directly exposed to illumination. Using laboratorymeasured power ratios and direct normal irradiance data from two case studies—Phoenix, AZ, and Albany, NY—the annual energy production for direct-beam irradiance in wedge-shaped LSCs mounted on vertical walls was determined.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Results show that solar cells within vertically installed LSCs generate 20% to 40% more annual energy than traditional vertically installed solar panels, depending on location and orientation (east- or south-facing). Additionally, wedge-LSCs exhibit peak power production at times traditionally considered suboptimal for standard solar panels, further increasing their value in building-integrated applications. Overall, these findings highlight the potential of wedge shaped LSCs as effective power-harvesting building envelopes. Ongoing efforts to improve efficiency through asymmetric light transmission interfaces will also be briefly discussed.</div>
    <div><br></div>

    <u>Biography</u>:</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Diana-Andra Borca-Tasciuc is a professor in the mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where she has been a faculty member since 2006. She holds a B.S. in physics from Bucharest University and a M.S. and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles. She is a recipient of the 2008 NSF CAREER Award and the 2013 Fulbright Scholarship. Her research interests lie in energy conversion, with a current focus on power harvesting</div>
    <div>microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), solar energy integration in building envelopes, and nanoscale thermal transport processes. Her work spans both fundamental and applied research, leading to over 100 journal articles and conference proceedings, as well as several patents and patent applications.</div>
