Open to all majors, this is an excellent opportunity for students in STEM fields to learn to tell effective stories and for students in social science and humanities fields to gain research and technical skills.

Participants who successfully complete the internship receive a $3000 stipend and a tuition scholarship for the 3-credit internship course.

Program Dates
CoLab 2025 will be held during Summer Session One and meets in-person from Monday, June 2nd through Friday, June 27th. PLEASE NOTE: During these dates, student interns are required to dedicate Monday through Friday from 9:30 am – 4:00 pm to the in-person, on-campus internship. Participants will have preparatory work to complete on their own the week prior to the in-person start date of 6/2, and a final reflective paper to submit the week following the final in-person date of 6/27.

Students celebrate Engineering and Computing Week with fun and networking

Where can UMBC engineering and computing students mingle with friends and mentors over sweet treats, test their knowledge and design skills in friendly competition, and network with potential employers? If it’s February, the answer is the annual Engineering and Computing Week, a traditional celebration of technology, held each year at UMBC to coincide with National Engineers Week.

The UMBC chapter of the engineering honors society Tau Beta Pi, in collaboration with various student engineering organizations on campus, organizes the week of activities each year. This year, the line-up of events featured a mix of social activities, such as painting and crafting, presentations from student organizations, and chances for teams to compete in games testing engineering knowledge and design skills.

UMBC chapters of the Information Systems Security Association, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Women Engineers, Engineers without Borders, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers all helped organize sessions. UMBC CyberDawgs, a group of UMBC students who share a common interest in cybersecurity, also participated.

Students could also join faculty, staff, and alumni from the College of Engineering and Information Technology at an evening reception at the Guinness Brewery near UMBC to socialize and network.

“I think the biggest success from the week was the great turnout and engagement we got from the students,” says August Phelps, a mechanical engineering senior and vice president of the UMBC chapter of Tau Beta Pi.

He says the event showcases the wide variety of engineering-focused student organizations at UMBC, which hold events throughout the year and offer great opportunities for students to develop leadership skills and form lasting connections with their peers.

“I hope attendees left feeling more connected as a community,” he says.

Location of the Organization (City, State):National Capital Region, USA

Title of position:Technical Project Manager intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

At The Boeing company I am a Technical Project Manager intern. Because of the size of Boeing, it has several departments spanning across multiple sectors. I work within Boeing's defense sector. My team specializes in providing analytical software & capabilities to our nation's various national agencies to support mission critical capabilities.

I am responsible for vetting and sourcing 3rd party vendors to support my team's various task orders. My day-to-day responsibilities vary, but it usually follows the following tasks; log into the work computer and attend stand-up meetings to update the team on any progress of work completed within the last week. After the stand-up, I look into various vendors/software currently on the market that I believe could boost my team's capabilities. Next I spend time working on project timelines through Microsoft Project, to reflect current updates within the project.

Since I also serve as the liaison between various vendors and my team, I end up spending sometime within vendor presentations and demos. I also gather all the weekly reports from all engineers apart from our various projects and compile it into one single report to be sent up to corporate and the customer.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I applied to Boeing around the end of March. I found the job listing through LinkedIn

What resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBC Career Center, Career Fairs, Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.), Student Organizations/Scholar Groups, Handshake

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

What I have enjoyed the most about working at Boeing as a TPM intern, is the high-level of communication I have had with not only the management side of Boeing but the various customers we support & vendors we work with.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Through my work at Boeing, I have made a tangible impact by streamlining operations, strengthening decision-making, and improving risk management for my company. All of which contribute to Boeing’s success in supporting national security and defense initiatives.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

My best piece of advice I could give to another student seeking a similar internship is, even if you're not coding daily, understand technical concepts like the software development processes, and data analysis which will you more valuable, and learn how to interpret and communicate technical data, which is beyond crucial for this role.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

What I enjoyed most about my position was the opportunity to bridge the gap between technical solutions and mission-critical decision-making, directly impacting national security operations. The Career Center played a key role in refining my resume and interview skills, helping me effectively communicate my technical and leadership experiences to land this opportunity.
