<Title>HIGH PERFORMANCE MULTIPHYSICS MODELING OF BLOOD FLOWS WITH CELL SUSPENSIONS</Title>
<Tagline>MARK THE DATE:  ME Seminar, Fri, Mar 7, ENG 112, 2:30 PM</Tagline>

    <div><br></div>Dr. Jifu Tan, assistant professor, mechanical engineering department at Binghamton University, will be giving a seminar this Friday.  Please see abstract and biography below.<div><br></div>
    <div>
    <u>Abstract</u>:</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <div>Modeling the complex flow of blood and mechanobiology of clots is important in understanding cardiovascular diseases and designing better treatment. However, it is challenging in modeling blood flow as it is an inherently multiscale multiphysics problem. The dynamic behavior of blood is complicated and poorly understood due to interactions between individual cells as well as interactions between the cells and the surrounding plasma and complex vessel walls. Moreover, the presence of highly deformable heterogeneous particles, such as blood cells, vesicles, and polymers, makes it particularly challenging to accurately describe the dynamics in such systems. In this presentation, a massively parallel multiphysics simulation platform developed on popular open-source code will be introduced to simulate such complex flows. The fluid flow was solved by the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), while the solid deformation was simulated by particle-based solver. The coupling was achieved through the immersed boundary method (IBM) so that different physics can exchange information with each other. The developed simulation framework was validated with various analytical solutions and experiments and shown to scale almost linearly over thousands of processors. Applications are given in clot mechanics, cancer cell detection in microfluidics, and blood flow in a patient-specific retina vascular network, demonstrating an efficient way of simulating coupled multi-physics problems.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>
    <u>Bio</u>:</div>
    </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div><div>Dr. Jifu Tan currently is an assistant professor in mechanical engineering at Binghamton University.  Before that, he was an associate professor at Northern Illinois University (NIU). He did a postdoctoral training in the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Pennsylvania.  He obtained his Ph.D. and M.S. in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University in 2015 and 2012, respectively. He received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from Beijing Jiaotong University in 2007.  His primary research interest is fluid structure interaction and its application in engineering and medicine, such as nanoparticle delivery, blood flow modeling, thrombosis and bleeding simulation, microfluidic device design for cell separation. He is also interested in high performance computing, multiscale modeling, data driven models, and machine learning. He is actively engaged in developing open-source code for scientific research. He is the recipient of the 2024 David W. Raymond Award for Use of Technology in Teaching at NIU. He is also the recipient of NSF CAREER award in 2024.</div></div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Light refreshments will be provided.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>We look forward to seeing you there!</div>

Social Justice Dialogue Facilitation Fellows </span><span>work for the Center for Social Justice Dialogue and are supervised by professional staff within the Center. </span></p>
    <p><span>The main role of this internship is to support the work of the Center for Social Justice Dialogue (CSJD) in cultivating a campus community where everyone feels empowered and equipped to engage in difficult dialogue across differences of identity, background, and lived experience. Built on a foundation of Intergroup Theory and other social justice education frameworks, interns will co-create and deliver workshops on topics of identity, social justice, and dialogue to student populations. Further, students will support projects including MediaBytes, Your Story Belongs Here, InterACT, FYS: Race, Social Justice, and Dialogue, and other departmental programs. Facilitators are expected to work a maximum of ten hours a week which includes weekly staff meetings to engage in deep learning, prepare for workshops, and continue developing student-focused programming. Interns engage in ongoing training, reviewing key activities, facilitation skills, and foundational introductions to various social justice concepts. Interns must be available for these training sessions as well as program retreats.</span></p>
