Intern of the Week: Marilin Argueta-Osorio

<Tagline>Check out Marilin's internship!</Tagline>

Major:

Current Class Level:
Senior

This semester I completed a(n)...:
Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization Name):
UMBC Division of Professional Studies

Location of the Organization (City, State):
Baltimore, MD

Title of position:
Marketing Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
I work for the UMBC Division of Professional Studies as a marketing intern. This department is broad but I specifically work with the Summer/Winter Session programs and Summer Enrichment Academy (SEA). My day-to-day responsibilities include crafting posts to promote featured Summer/Winter courses, events happening around campus, and deadline alerts. Alongside these posts, I work on posts that explain how to apply, when to register, and information on certain programs offered. In my role, I've created a couple of new templates to display this information. I spend a lot of time researching and designing. At the end of the week, I upload all my work to an application called AirTable. For the Winter Session, my supervisors and I brainstormed ideas of content that could be posted during that period to diversify the content. We came up with "Ideas to Stay Busy" and a couple of story posts to engage with audiences. For SEA, I use an application called Buffer to plan and schedule posts. I've created reels to promote courses and increase registrations for this program. I love that I can think outside the box in my role!

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I heard of this position in the spring of 2024 through one of my coworkers. She was graduating that semester and told me her supervisor was looking for applicants for her position. Per her recommendation, I received an email detailing the role and responsibilities. Four days later, I submitted my application by emailing my resume and cover letter. That same day I received an email to schedule an interview!

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
Networking with a student staff employee.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
My favorite part of this position is finding ways to engage with audiences via trending content and creating new templates. I love that my organization includes many programs and the feedback I receive on my work! I love that there is a sense of collaboration.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I believe I have made an impact through my work by bringing new and creative ideas to the table. I go beyond my daily tasks and find ways to evolve our social media pages. If I find something that can be tweaked to fit our changing audience, I research what can be done and present a solution.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
My advice is to talk with your friends and coworkers about internships. Sometimes, internships are a little hidden so asking around can help uncover them! Additionally, if your major sends emails about internships/jobs look into it.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.
I love that I can create content and receive feedback to elevate what I design. Collaborating allows me to see what I missed and gain knowledge on what I can do in the future. The Career Center helped me tailor my resume to the job. Also, I was able to see examples of cover letters, which was helpful in writing mine.

Berkowitz Memorial Fund

To commemorate the life and work of Bernard (“Bernie”) L. Berkowitz
(1927-2023), an endowed annual award program has been established to
encourage future generations of public servants who are demonstrating
characteristics exhibited by Bernie Berkowitz in his career in
Baltimore. The program is administered by the Center for Social Science
    Scholarship.

Born in 1927 in New York City to immigrant parents from rural
Hungary, Bernie grew up in working class neighborhoods in the Bronx. His
family’s experience with unemployment in the 1930’s was the basis of a
lifelong commitment to social justice and economic development. He
attended New York City public schools; graduated cum laude from C.C.N.Y.
with a major in economics, and received a Master’s in Urban Planning
from Columbia University. He served in the United States Army with
occupation forces in Japan and Korea.

In all of his endeavors, Bernie exemplified “no nonsense”
intellectual rigor, progressive social thinking, and creative thinking
about practical solutions. He aspired to improve the Baltimore community
by increasing economic opportunities. He believed in transcending
divisions – bringing together people of different social and economic
backgrounds. He is fondly remembered for his striving to “do the right
thing”, always with a sense of humor and kindness.

Award recipients will be selected annually by UMBC faculty in the
Center for Social Science Scholarship based on students’ demonstrated
interest in and commitment to planning and economic development of the
Baltimore community. Candidates should reflect the interests, values and
character of Bernie Berkowitz. Preference will be given to those
interested in public service or not-for-profit careers.

Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply by April 1, 2025.
