Why did you choose to major in INDS?

I chose to major in INDS because I knew I wanted to got to physical therapy school after graduation and become a doctor. However, UMBC does not offer degrees in exercise science or kinesiology so the best routes for me to take were to major in biological sciences or psychology. I tried both and neither seemed to fit well. INDS was the perfect way for me to take the classes I enjoy, with intent to get as much out of it as I could to prepare me best for the next steps in my education and future career.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?

I am attending the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Emory University. I believe my INDS degree helped me stand out against other candidates during applications and interviews.

Were you involved in any clubs or organizations? Did you hold any leadership positions? URCAD? URA? Off-campus internships? On-campus research experiences?

NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF SCRAMJET COMPONENT FLOWFIELDS

<Tagline>MARK THE DATE: ME Dept. Seminar, April 18, ENG 112, 2:30 PM</Tagline>

Dr. Jack Edwards, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at North Carolina State University, will be visiting UMBC this Friday to give a seminar. Please see abstract and biography below.

    Abstract:

The flow within high-speed engine concepts (scramjets, ramjets) is affected by strong compressibility effects, high turbulence intensity levels, finite rates of reaction, incomplete mixing, and core-flow blockage due to growth of turbulent shear layers. Scale-resolving techniques, such as large-eddy simulation, offer several advantages over state-of-the-practice Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) methods in capturing these interactions, as they are able to directly capture larger turbulent structures and their corresponding effects. Since molecular mixing and combustion take place at the unresolved subgrid scales, there is still a need to model the effects of reactivity as expressed at the resolved scales and to account for two-phase fluid dynamics associated with the injection of liquid fuels. This talk surveys efforts undertaken at NCSU to model scramjet component flow fields, referenced to experiments conducted at the University of Virginia, the University of Illinois, AFRL, and NCSU and considering both facility-specific influences and large-scale interactions among engine components. Numerical methods and physical modeling strategies used at NCSU will be discussed, as will new forays into the use of ‘data-driven’ techniques to improve RANS and LES models.

    Dejana Truck and Utility Equipment

Location of the Organization (City, State):
Baltimore, Maryland

Title of position:
Mechanical Engineering Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
I am currently an intern at Dejana Truck and Utility Equipment, where I’ve worked for nine months. My day-to-day includes designing truck fixtures and upgrades using SolidWorks. I also assist with business operations—managing Excel sheets, handling customer emails, and communicating with clients. This role has strengthened my technical, communication, and leadership skills.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I applied for the internship during the Spring 2024 semester after finding the opportunity on Handshake. I quickly scheduled an interview, toured the facility, and received an offer shortly after.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
I used Handshake and the UMBC Career Center’s resume and interview prep resources.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
What I’ve enjoyed most is seeing my designs come to life and knowing they’re making a real impact for customers.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I’ve completed numerous tasks that directly contribute to product development. Seeing the final results of my designs being delivered to customers is very rewarding.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Start early and apply widely—even to roles where you don’t meet every requirement. Use multiple platforms like Handshake, LinkedIn, and company websites. Tailor your resume, prepare for interviews, and make the most of networking opportunities.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.
“What I’ve enjoyed most about my position at Dejana is seeing my designs come to life and knowing they’re making a real impact for customers. The Career Center played a key role in my journey by providing resources like Handshake, which helped me find this opportunity, and offering guidance on resume building and interview preparation.”
